Zhang Wenjun was a Professor at NanjingUniversity of the Arts and a master in Chinese landscape painting. Born in1918, he loved calligraphy and painting since childhood. His works make Chinesetraditional paintings epitomize the zeitgeist of its corresponding eras, especiallyin "Meishan Reservoir" (now kept at National Art Museum of China). Itis rated as a revolutionary work of socialist characteristics, which defies theconcept of keeping Chinese landscape painting away from its realistic context. Explicitlymanifesting the zeitgeist in his painting, he broadens the artistic conceptionof Chinese traditional paintings, so that Chinese landscape painting starts toillustrate its realistic significance through brushes and ink. Known as the newvoice of the time, his works exhibit the unique aesthetic values in socialistart.
